Officials are investigating the circumstances surrounding a serious traffic accident that occurred Wednesday evening at the intersection of N.W. Broad Street and West Main Street, according to a Murfreesboro Police Department press release.

The Fatal Accident Crash Team is investigating how a bicyclist collided with a 31-year-old motorist at about 6:30 p.m., when the two were crossing the busy intersection.

“After a preliminary investigation, FACT investigators believe a 2005 silver Honda Accord driven by Donnie Leath of Morrison was traveling on N.W. on Broad Street and stopped at the intersection of West Main Street for a red traffic signal,” said Kyle Evans, public information officer for the Police Department.

“The signal cycled to green and the vehicle began to accelerate from a stopped position,” he said. “A bicyclist, Kenneth Haydel of Murfreesboro, was traveling east on West Main Street and attempted to cross N.W. Broad Street.”

Evans said Haydel, 53, struck the side of the vehicle and suffered serious injuries as a result of the accident.

Haydel was transported to Middle Tennessee Medical Center and later to Vanderbilt Hospital via Lifeflight.

He said Haydel is currently in critical but stable condition.

The traffic camera at this intersection may have captured the whole incident and thus the "silent witness" could end any speculation.

Good point jimmychurch So far the media reports have avoided saying that the injured cyclist ran the red light. If (he) had been driving an auto the driver of the Honda may have been killed.
