A 14-year-old beagle was put down after suffering a beating from a man Friday off Primm Lane, a sheriff’s deputy reported.

The beagle was running loose on Primm Lane when it suffered the beating, Deputy Michael Romans reported. Owner Zack Primm of Middle Tennessee Boulevard was visiting his mother when the dog was outside.

“They later found out that the dog was severely beaten by a male subject,” Romans reported. “Primm advised that the teeth in the dog’s mouth were knocked out and they found a piece of a stick about 1-inch in diameter lodged in the eye socket.”

The beagle was still alive. Due to the extent of his injuries, Primm took the pet to the emergency veterinarian who put the dog down.

Detective Troy Hooker is investigating.

This person should be beaten also. What he did shows what kind of person he is.

Very disturbing. This thug is capable of doing the same thing to humans.

I am in tears, hearing this! Beagles are the most lovable, smart, sweet, friendly dogs and I just can't imagine someone hurting an aging pet. I pray they find out who did this and prosecute the person to the fullest! This makes me so sad - I think of my beagle and i just want to go hug her....

My hope is that at some point the useless pile of human flesh that did this to a defenseless animal will have to explain to his own child why someone stole their toy, or worse yet, injured their pet. Maybe this MAROON will turn himself IN, but I doubt he has the gonadekugeln to face the legal music.

WTF is wrong with people.

Detective Hooker, please find out who did this!!!

Again, man's best friend is abused, by a human...I've been a dog lover since age 3 when I witnessed our old farm dog keep an enraged boar hog from killing my father.

What a SICK< DEPRAVED INDIVIDUAL!
He needs to suffer the same punishment as he inflicted on this defenseless and precious canine, and companion to Mr. Zack Primm. What a worthless excuse for a human. Zack, I am sorry that you and your family suffered this personal, painful loss.
An Eye for an Eye, (although meant to mitigate punishment in the Old Testament to have the punishment fit the crime and not let the criminal be overly punished) i.e., the punishment should fit the crime...this lowlife should be flogged on the Public Square during a time when he can become a demonstration for animal cruelty. Our society has become one of such weak, "Casper Milquetoast" punishments and sentencing. Where has common decency gone? I know the Bible says pray for your enemy and that God will bring justice to all. Well, bring it on!
I hope that you have a good-Day Mr. Weak, poor excuse for being a member of the Human Race...
Mr Primm, God Bless you and your family while you heal.

This person should have been shot on sight. If there were stiffer penalties for animal abuse then I bet people would think twice before beating an animal.

By: Lynniek2160 on 2/2/10
There should definitely be tougher penalties and sentences for animal abusers. People that do that are prone to violent, aggressive behavior in general and so are a danger to society. People who have anger control major problems AND people who are sadistic and like/enjoy hurting others.

I have always felt that animals were put here as a test for us as to what kind of human being we are. I hope the person that did this will read this and realize that you have to face your maker as well as yourself on this one.I hope I never meet a person as low and unfeeling as you must be and if I do I will recognize you for the lowlife you are and get away from you as fast as possible. As an owner of nine loving and cherished dogs I find this behavior apalling and hope you get what you deserve.watch out for your karma.

you know we dont have the full story. Would I have beaten a dog that old and that size no should any one? no. but you never know if the person who did this was beating the dog because it was comming after them because it was not on a leash or what. I am just saying. I am with the rest of you that it is wrong and sick what the person did but the circumstances are not stated in the article. Coulda been an ole WWII vet with a cain who was on blood thinners and a dog bite would be realy bad for them.,.. but then again could just be a really sick person who needs therapy so they do not transfer this kind of violence on to people.

Parkerg: I'm just thinking if it was "an ole WWII vet with a cain who was on blood thinners" he probably wouldn't have had the strength and ability to knock out the dog's teeth and shove a stick that far into its eye socket. I'm also thinking that if a beagle attacked, especially a 14 yr. old beagle, it had to be provoked. I realize you can train any dog to be mean, but those dogs are not attack dogs and are sweet by nature. My dad's beagle is maybe 9 years old and that pup couldn't hurt a rabbit if it tried.

Whoever did this to the defenseless dog, probably beats his wife and/or children, too. It is a fact that 'people' who beat animals are people abusers as well. A youngster who does this will become a people abuser. A sickening story. Please let us know if this 'person' is caught! As Lynniek2160 said...the penalty for this action should be much more severe than what it is right now.

By: Boo on 2/3/10
parkerkim, I agree, this is so heartbreaking. I am so angry! gypsyjoan is right, the penalty for such as this is not severe enough for a creep like this. Detective Hooker, please stay on this and find the low life that did this!

I am sitting here reading my puppy at my feet. How can anyone do such a thing. I have no words to add.

By: SocEtTuem on 2/3/10
Any person who beats a 14 year old dog in such a manner has some serious psychological and social issues. The "male subject" is a menace and should be appropriately punished for his act of wanton cruelty. It's bad enough he did it to a dog, what would he do to another human being? Disgusting.

By: gotitans2007 on 2/3/10
If they know the beating came from "a man"...who is the man? Did he admit to it? Name him! What's to investigate? Charge him to the fullest extent of the law!!! Let Zack Primm shove a 1-inch diameter stick in his eye and beat all his teeth out...only fair! I will volunteer to hold the loser down...

It is a horrible person that abuses an animal.

But, please don't let your pets run free.

By: rt260a on 2/3/10
do the same to the so called human that did this

By: KP2010 on 2/3/10
Well, I'm a Primm, and I live on Primm Lane. I can tell you that the precious beagle that was beaten was the sweetest dog I've ever had the pleasure of being around. Our family has been on this land for a hundred plus years, and we've always had dogs. Not one time have we ever had a problem with a "neighbor", but apparently times have changed. One thing about us Primms though, we dont ever forget...ever.

parkerq: You are right, we don't have the full story, if the person was attacked, they should call 911 after beating the dog, and stay with the injured animal to report the incident. This was not done by someone protecting themselves, this was done by some mean heartless individual. But nothing will be done, because the laws in this county do not allow for cruelty to animals to be dealt with properly. Trust me, I have reported incidents before, nothing is done, even when the humane society knows who is committing the crime. That is why these things continue to happen! If we had an ASPCA in our county, this type of behavior might stop.
