The U.S. House today approved legislation to reauthorize the Civil War Battlefield Preservation Program, which will provide grants to preserve historic Civil War battlefield sites.

“Tennessee is rich in Civil War history,” said Congressman Bart Gordon, who has long supported the Preservation Program. “In Middle Tennessee alone, 18 major battles occurred during the Civil War.”

Statewide, 38 significant battles were fought during the Civil War. Since 1996, when the Civil War Battlefield Preservation Program was originally created, 600 acres of Civil War battlefield lands have been preserved in Tennessee.

“By making these battlefields a permanent part of our history,” added Congressman Gordon, “we will be able to pass the lessons from the war that first divided our nation and ultimately resulted in uniting us down onto our children for generations to come.”

The House bill, the Civil War Battlefield Preservation Act, authorizes an annual $10 million to be awarded to states and localities by the U.S. Department of Interior’s Civil War Battlefield Preservation Program. The award recipients’ must provide matching funds and use the money to acquire lands or interest in lands to preserve Civil War battlefields that are not protected as elements by the National Park Service.

Thank God someone is looking out for our future generations to learn the history and sacrifices that have been given for this great country.
