The fields and forests near Murfreesboro saw one of the bloodiest and most important battles of the American Civil War 149 years ago.
Beginning Monday, Stones River National Battlefield park rangers and volunteers will be telling the story of this tragic event that affected the lives of thousands of soldiers and civilians. Living history programs will be presented at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. daily.
On Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, rangers will present living history programs every hour on the hour between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Over the weekend, visitors will have the opportunity to watch Union and Confederate infantry and artillery demonstrate the use of their weapons as rangers share the stories of the soldiers who fought here 148 years ago using their letters and diaries.
On Jan. 2, rangers and volunteers will present “The Very Forest Seemed to Fall,” a program that highlights the battle’s bloody climax through the stories of cannoneers. It will be presented at 11 a.m., and again at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m.
