The Murfreesboro City Council approved Thursday a $4.8 million bid for the second phase of construction on Veterans Parkway. The bid was awarded to Dement Construction of Jackson, Tenn.

The section, formerly the Southwest Loop, extends from the intersection of Kimbro and Barfield roads to near the entrance of Barfield Crescent Park on Barfield Crescent Road.

"This will essentially complete a five-lane section from Church Street to the Barfield and Kimbro roads intersection. Phase 2-B of this project is scheduled to begin in 2012. Completion of both of these phases will complete the four- to five-lane section to state route 99," Chief City Engineer Chris Griffith told the council.

The bid also serves as the first phase of completing the Stones River Greenway extension to Barfield Crescent Park.

"The construction of this bridge will allow the existing bridge on Barfield Crescent Road to become a pedestrian bridge, and we're currently in the appraisal project and expect to begin the extension of the Greenway in the first part of 2012," Griffith explained.

The city continues to see savings in construction costs of nearly $150,000 from previously budgeted projected costs.

"Certainly this is an exciting project, another piece to the long puzzle to get us across the southwest portion of our community, and we're very pleased to see this moving along," Mayor Tommy Bragg told the council before the bid was unanimously approved.

I read a lot of stories about construction projects. Suggest that it would help if a small picture of the project could be posted with the story, so people that have not lived here all their life would know where these different places are located.
