The Rutherford LEAP Program (Learning Education Advancement Program) has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the AT&T Foundation, the philanthropic arm of AT&T*.

The mission of Rutherford LEAP is to assist children in the Rutherford County school system to “leap forward” into the 21st century through the use of technology. The specific goal of the program is to provide every seventh grader in the public school system a laptop computer to be used as a supplemental learning tool through twelfth grade. It is believed that a one-to-one computing program, where every student is equipped with a PC, would create an integrated learning environment that would maximize student achievement and faculty efficiency.

According to Sara Brody, director – Rutherford LEAP, “The four key learning features that the laptops offer to the students are: the ability to do effective and accurate internet research, the learning tools to create and use spreadsheets, the ability to become proficient in word processing and to learn presentation skills by using PowerPoint.” Ms. Brody added, ”Proficiency in these skills will enable the students to be competitive in today’s workforce.”

“There are real opportunities for personal and professional growth that Rutherford LEAP aspires to provide Rutherford County students in grades 7 – 12,” said Tennessee State Senator Bill Ketron. “I would like to see the Rutherford LEAP program replicated throughout our great State.”

“Technology is transforming the way we communicate and the way we learn,” added Gregg Morton, President of AT&T Tennessee. “We appreciate Rutherford LEAP’s efforts to ensure their students develop in this area and are pleased to be a part of the endeavor.”

“Providing our students the technology tools they need to succeed in school and in the job market,” added Senator Jim Tracy, “will bring real economic enrichment to our community for years to come.”

“Giving our young people more options in technology education is critical to the health of the Middle Tennessee economy,” said Lanie Johnson, Regional Director – AT&T. “We laud Rutherford LEAP for this program and for those who make it possible.”

“Thank you AT&T for the generous financial support,” added Ms. Brody, “and a very special thanks to Senators Bill Ketron and Jim Tracy for their support of LEAP and for encouraging investment in our students’ education.”

Verizon Wireless donates 100's of thousands, if not millions of dollars every year to Domestic Violence programs throughout the country, with a large percentage of that going to Rutherford County. That's not to mention the money they and their employees donated to Haiti. And they will match any donations made by their employees, to the charity of the employee's choosing. Their philanthropy far exceeds AT&T's in this community.
