Perhaps it was divine intervention that prompted someone who set a Bible on fire to try to extinguish the fire inside a church bus Thursday off Jones Boulevard.

Church members noticed smoke from the Middle Tennessee Baptist Church bus about 6:15 p.m. outside at Richard Road, Murfreesboro Police Officer Michele Ratleph reported. They found pages of a church Bible on fire to the right of the driver’s seat.

Member Jose Dominquez grabbed a broom and tried to sweep out the burning Bible.

Two juveniles grabbed a fire extinguisher and tried to douse the fire. Once extinguished, Dominquez mentioned reviewing the bus cameras and the juveniles left in a hurry.

Murfreesboro Assistant Fire Chief Allen Swader said fire investigators don’t know who set the fire.

“They tried to extinguish most of it with a fire extinguisher,” Swader said.

Smith took the remainder of the Bible as evidence and for testing.

“At this time, we don’t have any suspects in mind,” Swader said. “We have some people of interest.”

Damage was confined to the driver’s seat area of the bus, the floor and the handle to open the bus.

People who have information about the fire or suspects may call Crime Stoppers at 893-7867 or Smith at 893-1422.
