A convicted robber accused of robbing two men at gunpoint Wednesday was apprehended within minutes by an alert sheriff’s fugitive deputy.

Suspect Walter Hooks, 26, of Morrison, was accused of robbing Marcus Garvey Cochran, 26, and his roommate, Michael Brian Yannes, 23, of Wakonda Court, Deputy Trey Nunley reported. The robbery occurred about 2 p.m. Wednesday in a wooded area off East Pitts Lane.

Hooks was charged with aggravated robbery in 2009.

The victims called 911 to report they were “just robbed at gunpoint by another man and were now hiding in a wooded area,” Nunley reported.

Warrants Lt. David Clark said a description of the suspect and his vehicle were radioed to deputies. Fugitive Squad Deputy Jack Keisling spotted the suspect and his vehicle behind Knight’s Inn on South Church Street. Keisling put Hooks in his patrol car while Fugitive Squad Deputy Randy Morrow cleared the suspect’s weapon.

Both Clark and Detective Steve Kohler credited Keisling with apprehending the suspect.

Kohler said the handgun believed used in the robbery and three $100 bills were recovered from Hooks. Kohler charged Hooks with aggravated robbery, two counts of aggravated assault, theft and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. The victims and the suspect were acquaintances.

Hooks is being held on $35,000 bond at Rutherford County Adult Detention Center. A hearing is set June 27 in General Sessions Court.
