Are ID cards for illegal immigrants a good thing?

President Barack Obama and Mexican President Felipe Calderon criticized Wednesday Arizona's law that makes failure to carry immigration documents a crime.

But a growing number of cities around the country are taking a different approach: They are issuing identification cards (ID) to illegal immigrants. Government-issued ID is necessary to cash checks, pick up packages from mail centers or access clinics, doctor's offices, recreation centers or pools.

In New Jersey, Trenton and Princeton are among the latest cities endorsing a community-issued ID card. Bill Wakefield is with the group that spearheaded the ID card program there.

"It doesn't allow them to do many of the things that a passport or a state-issued drivers license would do. In other words, they can't get on an airplane. But they can go to the local library and check out a book," he said.

Some immigration reform advocates strongly oppose the ID cards, saying the communities endorsing them are hampering the enforcement of U.S. immigration laws.

Three years ago, New Haven, Conn., became the first city to approve community ID cards, amid considerable controversy. Now, Mayor John DeStefano says it has been a success and is no longer generating any news.

"Different communities approach immigration issues differently. We see one approach in Arizona. Other communities, such as New Haven, have approached it a different way. The bottom line to me is that the greatest periods of growth in America are when we've had robust immigration."

In Asbury Park, N.J., which is about 1 mile square, about 250 cards have been issued since 2008. That city's Latino liaison, Eve Sanchez Silver, says the card is especially useful when emergency workers respond to someone ill or injured.

"If they find a card and it says 'Oaxaca, Mexico,' it's not much help in letting you know where that individual should be now, where that person's family is. So having this community ID card really has been a help."

In Arizona, the failure to carry immigration documents has been made a crime. Community ID cards, in contrast, are being used elsewhere to make life easier for illegal immigrants - who fill many jobs some Americans won't take, Wakefield points out.

Just get caught in Mexico without papers and see what happens. Or in Iran hiking.

Why should we make life easier for illegals? If they are not here legally, ship them back!

Do you think Obama and Calderon have even read the law? Holder and Napalitano blasted it then admitted they never even read it.

And why should taxpayer money be spent on making life easier for ILLEGALS?

I don't buy the excuse that they are filling jobs Americans won't take. They're filling jobs that people want to pay cash and not have to provide any benefits or pay any taxes.

I have no problem with anyone who wants to come here and make a better life for themselves. But do it the legal way. Don't come here and become a burden on the taxpayers.

I agree with BoltAction...they aren't jobs that Americans won't take. It is just the fact that the business owners know that they can save a lot of $$ by not paying payroll taxes, unemployment insurance and workmans comp. insuracne. So when one of them ends up hurt at work, they have to go on their own dime... in most cases the taxpayers!! It is all a bunch of crap! They aren't here legally so give them an ID card that tells us that and then let them check out a book or work! wow, what have we come to in this society?? But you better make sure that you don't get caught driving without a license or some other crime!!

How can you give an ID to an illegal? That in itself would breaking the law by recognizing someone that should not be here. I see nothing wrong with federal ID for everyone.

I am ashamed at our Congress and Senate, starting with the presiding vice president and speaker during the remarks made by Mexico's president to a joint session. They should have led a walk out. The Mexican law is more harsh on illegal immigration, recently a felony and jail time, than the Arizona/US law. The CNN inteview with Calderon, he was asked if an illegal in Mexico could get a job-answer: NO. If caught he/she would be fined and sent back home. The Mexican government, led by its president, has published documents on how to enter the US illegally. If Guatamala or Nicarauga(sp) did the same for the southern Mexican border, wonder what the "fair minded" president would do?

Getting back to my original thought - the Congress should have stood and walked out.

Great comments all!
As a local cop dealing with the havok that illegals cause, it amazes me that this is even a debate.
If you are in this country illegally, YOU ARE BREAKING THE LAW.
BTW, it doesn't matter what race you are (to those wanting to make this a cheap "race" issue).

I am about as progressive as progressives go but what part of illegal don't people get. we could stop this now by holding employers accountable. Not some piddly fine some jail time. hiring ilegals would stop. There needs to a way for employers to call or fax in the id for quick approval. I am an RN I am finger printed by the state before I can work im this state. It can not be that hard for us to have an ID that proves who we are.
