The cast of "Jesus Christ Superstar," the March production of The Center for the Arts, treated patrons to a sneak preview of three numbers from the show during An Affair of the Art benefit held Tuesday at Middle Tennessee State University.
Liz McPhee, wife of MTSU President Sidney A. McPhee, hosted the benefit. Proceeds from the Valentine's Day-themed event benefitted the Center for the Arts, Murfreeesboro’s downtown community theater.
The three songs performed by the cast featured MTSU student John David Welch, who plays Jesus Christ, and Jimmy Saiz, who plays Judas Iscariot, as well as Cyndie Verbeten, who plays Simone Zealotes. Jacob Miller, the production’s pianist, accompanied the cast.
The musical, directed by award-winning stage veteran Renee Robinson, will open in Murfreesboro on Friday, March 8, and be featured for four weekends. Shows are set for Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Sundays. It will close on Easter Sunday, March 31.
“We deeply appreciate the opportunity from Mrs. McPhee to showcase the vocal talents of our cast and start the buzz about our production,” said producer Andrew Oppmann.
Based on the rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, the show is drawn from biblical accounts of the week leading up to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus.
