Alumni plan 'A Central Celebration'

Organizers of A Central Celebration 2010 are trying to contact as many Murfreesboro Central High School alumni as possible to inform them about events during the July Fourth weekend.

While the Class of 1970 is planning its 40th reunion during the weekend, it has extended invitations to other MCHS classes to participate in events on Friday, July 2, and Saturday, July 3.

Organizers said the success of A Central Celebration in 2009 that drew hundreds of alumni to the Murfreesboro Square and to the Central Middle School campus is raising hopes that even more alumni will be able to attend this year.

One major difference this year, however, will be that the reunion events on July 3 will be at First Presbyterian Church downtown rather than the Central campus because renovations will be under way to prepare for the opening of Central Magnet School in the fall.

Central Celebration events downtown Friday night are open to the entire community, and the Class of 1970 has extended invitations to the classes of 1968, 1969, 1971 and 1972 to attend reunion activities at First Presbyterian Saturday afternoon.

Because July Fourth is on Sunday this year, the holiday will provide a three-day weekend, and organizers said they hope this will allow for more travel time for alumni who do not live in Rutherford County.

Celebration activities will get under way Friday, July 2, with a mixer at The Blue Rooster on the east side of the Square, beginning at 5 p.m. A cash bar and light refreshments will be available for returning alumni who are renewing acquaintances.

Music will begin on the Square at 6 p.m. Friday, July 2, with The Crusty Veterans band providing music of the 1960s and 1970s. Main Street: Murfreesboro/Rutherford County is sponsoring the downtown concert.

Events will continue Saturday, July 3, with a barbecue at First Presbyterian from noon-5 p.m. Also planned for the afternoon are class exhibits, music of the era and a lot of conversations, organizers said. Cost is $20 per person.

More information about A Central Celebration-2010 is available at mchs1970.org. The site includes a reservation form for the barbecue.
