Murfreesboro beat Chattanooga to host the Olympic-style Spring Fling Championships through 2012.

"I am thrilled beyond belief," said Mona Herring, vice president of the Convention & Visitors Bureau for the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce, following Mondays announcement. "We have enjoyed hosting it the past four years and we look forward to hosting it for at least the next three years."

"It is a good day for Murfreesboro and Rutherford County," Herring said.

Knoxville had submitted an incomplete bid but did not present a proposal.

Rutherford County has held the Olympic-style sports festival for the past four years. The event brings all of TSSAA’s five spring sport state tournaments and an estimated $3.5 million in tourism each year to the economy.

“We are absolutely thrilled,” said Chamber of Commerce chairman Blake Smith. “This event brings in millions to our local economy and gives our community an opportunity to showcase all the wonderful things we have to offer.”

The Chamber of Commerce made a bid of $350,000 to host the event. The minimum bid was $225,000. In addition to the monetary bid, Rutherford County offered close to $50,000 in in-kind donations from local businesses including complimentary meals, hotel rooms and transportation.

Chattanooga bid $375,000 to host. In-kind donations brought the total to $392,000.

The Chamber of Commerce chartered a motor coach to take the Team Rutherford County delegation to the bid presentation in Hermitage. About 50 local residents were in attendance.

Among those in the group: MTSU president Dr. Sidney McPhee, Murfreesboro City Councilman Doug Young, MTSU athletic director Chris Massaro, MTSU baseball coach Steve Peterson, MTSU track coach Dean Hayes, Destination Rutherford chairman Bill Jones, president of the sports council Wade Hays and Chamber of Commerce board member Pam Little. Several other associations made the trip including the Chamber of Commerce, Convention and Visitors Bureau, Rutherford County Hospitality Association, and Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation, along with many volunteers and community supporters. Former state representative John Hood served as emcee during the presentation.

Several people spoke to the TSSAA Board of Control including Blake Smith, Doug Young, Dr. McPhee, Chris Massaro, Dean Hayes, Pam Little and CVB Vice President Mona Herring.

After Herring spoke, a DVD produced by Murfreesboro Channel 3 was shown to the TSSAA Board of Control. The DVD illustrated the energy and enthusiasm of past Spring Fling events held in Rutherford County.

“This was a complete group effort,” said Herring. “The community truly came together to help keep this important event here. This would not have been possible without Destination Rutherford, the Industrial Development Board, the Chamber board of directors, the Convention and Visitors Bureau Board and the City of Murfreesboro along with countless private donations.”

Murfreesboro/Rutherford County's enthusiasm, central location and athletic facilities specifically track and field facilities secured the Spring Fling for the next three years.

"Both cities made a tremendous effort," said Fred Kessler of TSSAA, during Monday afternoon's presentation. "Both cities (Murfreesboro and Chattanooga) have held Spring Fling and did great jobs."

Kessler said Murfreesboro has an advantage in that it is in the center of the state and more accessible to athletes and fans.

MTSU's track and field facilities, which TSSAA deemed better than Chattanooga, helped seal the deal for Murfreesboro.

Other facilities except for Chattanooga's tennis facilities were judged as being equal.

MTSU President Sidney McPhee said he could not see Murfreesboro not securing Spring Fling again.

"We have world-class facilities," he said. "You don't get any better."

It must have been pre-ordaned if Mona Herring had anything to do with it and it didn't get away. How's the Bible Park planning coming along, Mona?

By: ItsGood on 8/17/09
thinkingman, you really need to start thinking as your hate is showing.

Thanks to all of those people that were present at the presentation today. This is a great accomplishment with many different people and agencies were working together. I applaud each of you. Now we can get on with the business of highlighting our city and facilities.

I still can't believe we pay these people to come here. If anything they should be paying us. This is just so backwards.

By: kcouncil on 8/18/09
They do pay us. Did you read the part in the article where it says the even brings in $3.5 million in revenue. Wouldn't you give up $350k to get back $3.5 million?

By: Farmall on 8/18/09
They pay the motels and restaurants, etc. They should be the ones putting up the cash not I.

By: life_is_short on 8/18/09
Farmall - the motels and restaurants in turn pay taxes that mean revenue for our community. And why do you even think you are putting up the cash? Maybe you should research where the money actually comes from for programs like this.

By: Farmall on 8/18/09
According to the story I did put up the cash. My tax dollars at work thanks.

By: ItsGood on 8/18/09
Farmall, do you watch the Olympics? If so, do you realize what cities / countries pay to host the championships?
The TSSAA Spring Fling is the same, yet on a smaller scale.
It makes Murfreesboro "big time".

Farmall,

How dare they keep your taxes in check by investing wisely, getting a huge return, and shining a huge spotlight on the city. Who cares if they come to the tournament, spend a bunch of money, like it here, and come back to spend more money which will provide us with good schools, extra police, extra firefighters, a clean city, usable roads, beautiful parks and greenways, etc. etc. etc? How dare they use probably less than one of your tax dollars for something so overwhelmingly positive and constructive. Appalling! You should throw a tea bag at them.

It is not the job of the city or county to invest in money making schemes. That is the job of the private sector. If the chamber of commerce wants to pony up the money to bribe them to come here, that is their right. My tax dollars should not be involved.

By: soon2b6 on 8/18/09
The private sector DID put up the money, $225,000 from the Chamber (who signed the actual contract) and another $50,000 pledged by hotels, restaurants, and other business.... it's clearly stated in the aricle. How has this discussion even gotten this far?

By: soon2b6 on 8/18/09
One more thing, there have been only 2 negative posts on this issue... can you even imagine the outcry that would have occured if we had lost Spring Fling? It would have been brutal.

Farmall,

Are you serious or being sarcastic and/or ironic? Do you really not realize that cities use "incentives" to lure businesses as standard practice? Why do you think Verizon Wireless built a call center here, or the new LED facility is coming here? They did so because the city gave them tax incentives to do so. A little upfront investment (aka money making schemes) brings much needed jobs and money to the community.

I really hope I'm being punked. Although it would explain the mentality behind tea bag rallies.

How about some sensible questions being answered without any emotion.
I've heard for years about the "millions" that TSSAA brings into the city. But can someone list where this money is generated? Are we talking about tax collections, gross sales, net sales or what?
If you're talking about sales taxes then is that the total sales tax of 9.75% or the local option portion? How do we arrive at this $3.5 million in Tourism figure? And what does it cost to raise this figure? What about the money that the state and city has put into local and MTSU facilities? This was tax money and needs to counted against any revenue to derive a profit.

I am amazed that usually normal, sane business people who would demand a thorough cost analyis of a project this size can lose all common sense when it comes to sports or recreation. I'm not taking a side one way or another but how about looking at the true cost/return of this project before you start wetting all over yourself.

Felixstow-
It is a simple tourism boon in a 5 day period. Tourists come in on Monday, dump 3.5 million in gross revenues in our lap, and go home on Friday night. Tax revenue is more than the local option because every hotel/motel room in the County is booked and there is an additional hotel/motel tax (that varies by municipality) that is tacked on to the 9.75%. What is immeasurable is all of the trickle-down revenue that is associated with the tourism dollars. Example: Chattanooga Red bank H.S. Tennis Team eats dinner at Demo's, leaves server a big tip. Server goes to Bink's and purchases that expensive backpack they have been eyeing. Owner of Bink's has a terrific month in May and goes ahead to Stones River Nissan and buys that $40,000 Nissan he has been eyeing. Nissan Plant sees increase in production, picks up man-hour pace. Salesman at Stones River Nissan gets great comission and buy's that starter home from Ole South Properties. Home salesperson treats his wife and kid's to dinner at Demo's, and on and on and on.
Felixstow, that is how sane (not emotional) business operates and Thank God we are livin' in the good ole USA and can experience this, for now anyway.

I for one am happy they have used my tax money to make a decent rate of return. I just wish they would pay down some debt and can anyone answer why we need a 5.1 million dollar visitor center? What the hell are you going to visit, we already have the hidious blue signs to help you get lost.

By: ItsGood on 8/19/09
Mac, so you do not believe in getting a return on investment?

By: vdanr on 8/19/09
Either Farmall was being ridiculously sarcastic or he/she was drunk while making those comments.

Soon2b6, that is a very good way of putting it. I am also happy they have used my tax money for this event. Not just for the rate of return, but also because my children participate.
