A rainy May for the record books

May 2009 goes down in the record books as the sixth wettest in Nashville.

Nashville saw 8.45 inches of rain making it the wettest month since September
2003 when 8.70 inches fell, explained National Weather Service Meteorologist Bobby Boyd said.

Murfreesboro saw almost as much rain over the month. According to the NWS station at the Murfreesboro water treatment plant, the ‘Boro saw around 5 inches and a Lascassas Community Collaborative, Rain, Hail and Snow Network (CoCoRahs) station recording 4 inches from May 3 through May 10.

“I might also add that the greatest rainfall for the month of May in Middle Tennessee based on CoCoRahs was near Columbia which measured 14.85 inches,” Boyd said.

The wettest May on record in Nashville was 1983, when the city charted 11.04 inches.

Normal rainfall for the month of May in Nashville is 5.07 inches.
