A 5-month-old girl was admitted to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital Wednesday after being left an hour with a heat index of more than 100 degrees in a Mercury Mountaineer, Murfreesboro Police reported.

Mother Joann Bell and sister Janice Bell, 15, of Santana Street searched for the baby, Officer Jason Lowder reported.

“Janice located the baby in the vehicle purple in color and very hot,” Lowder reported. “Ms. Bell advised she immediately took the baby inside to attempt to cool the child down. Janice called 911.”

Lowder escorted paramedics to Middle Tennessee Medical Center before the infant was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Vanderbilt.

Bell told Lowder she and her children went to the tanning bed and McDonald’s before returning home about 2:30 p.m. Her daughter usually helps bring in the children and the mother assumed the baby was brought inside.

“After about an hour, she wondered why the baby hadn’t woken up,” Lowder reported, adding she searched for the baby.

Police notified the Department of Children’s Services, who launched an investigation along with Murfreesboro detectives.

Spokesman Kyle Evans said detectives consulted with the district attorney’s office.

“The investigation is continuing,” Evans said.

I'm sick at my stomach hearing about this - let's pray for the baby. It's a miracle she survived to this point.

There is absolutely NO EXCUSE for this to have happened! As a very busy mother of a 2 year old I have NEVER forgotten my child in the car or any where. It was not the responsibility of the 15 year old to get the baby out and even so, what took so long for the mother to check on the child?? The sad thing is she will probably just get a slap on the wrist! My heart goes out to this innocent baby girl and I hope she is able to pull through.

Absolutely disgusting human beings. The mother and the sister should BOTH be thrown in prison for the rest of their lives or, even better, be forced to sit in a 150 degree car in the middle of the Sahara desert for five hours!

This poor, innocent baby girl needs to be placed in protective custody until a family that actually gives a damn adopts her.

I will have trouble sleeping tonight thinking of the poor purple baby burning alive in a car.

Boy, I can not imagine how something like this happens. They need our prayers. The baby, for her life, and the mother for some brains.

Respectthelaw. I can understand your feelings but stop and remember the 15 year old is just a child herself and shouldn't be punished for something that is NOT her responsibility. I pray the baby is ok and that the 15 yr old doesn't carry her mother's guilt the rest of her life.

im not blaming the 15yr old... im blaming the mother of the 15yr old and the baby..im not saying punish the 15yr old. but the mother needs to be punished FOR SURE!!! i dont see how someone can "forget" there child!!
