Successful school systems are built on the backs on experienced teachers and the teachers who will retire from Rutherford County Schools this year will be sorely missed, Director of Schools Harry Gill Jr. said.

“Thank you for teaching children and making a better future. … Each of you played a significant role in our school system,” Gill continued.

Rutherford County Schools honored the 58 teachers and principals who are retiring at the end of the year Wednesday afternoon.

Earlier this year, the system offered a voluntary buyout of teachers with more than 15 years experience but less than 25 years experience. The buyout was intended to plug part of a $1.1 million gap in the school board’s budget.

Of the 58 retiring teachers 38 took the system’s offer.

Now that the teachers are facing days of sleeping late, County Commissioner and retired teacher Joyce Ealy had some advice.

“The main thing is to stay involved and remember it’s just another stage in life,” she said.
