The 2014 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program completed 534 tax returns online and at the physical location with more than a $750,989 investment through tax refunds in Rutherford and Cannon Counties.

Five hundred and two returns were completed in person with an average refund of $1,775.39.  Thirty-two returns were completed online through My FreeTaxes with an average refund of $2,872.  Fifth Third Bank also partnered with the program this year by taking their eBus to different locations in Rutherford and Cannon counties to prepare taxes online.

Meisha Waller, Director of Community Impact at United Way said, “These refunds represent opportunities for families and individuals in our community to have increased financial stability.  With that stability comes a greater quality of life.”

This year’s VITA program marks the third year that United Way has partnered to provide the service in Rutherford and Cannon Counties.   The 2014 onsite VITA program was available to any households with an annual income of $52,000 or less and online preparation was available to househoulds earning $58,000 or less annually.
