MTSU President Dr. Sidney A. McPhee announced today that he has recommended to Chancellor Charles Manning and the Tennessee Board of Regents that the name Robert W. McLean be removed from the university’s School of Music.

“When considering all the facts regarding this matter, and in light of the bankruptcy trustee’s recent report that indicates there are likely to be no funds to fulfill the commitment, I felt it was most appropriate to request that Mr. McLean’s name be removed from the school,” McPhee said. “Our world-class school of music will now be referred to as the Middle Tennessee State University School of Music.”

The change will require final approval by the Tennessee Board of Regents.

In addition, President McPhee noted that MTSU and the MTSU Foundation, through their respective legal representatives, are in discussion with the bankruptcy trustee in the McLean bankruptcy case.

Dr. McPhee went on to say, “We recognize that many lives in our community have been adversely affected by this unfortunate and sensitive situation. Therefore, MTSU and the MTSU Foundation are working with the trustee towards a resolution of the legal issues in the bankruptcy proceeding."

Glad to hear MTSU made the right decision in removing McLean's name from the School of Music. This has been a sad situation. Now, they need to go a step further and return all the money McLean donated to the University to keep from having anything at all bad connected to the school that would harm their reputation.

The problem with MTSU's Music Dept.'s being able to "return all the money McLean donated to the University" is the question "Where will they get the money?" It's not like MTSU is a profit-making institution. It's not like the money is just sitting in a bank collecting interest. The Steinway pianos purchased with the "donation" are bought and being used as we write. They can't raise tuition to cover the cost; that's a Board of Regents decision. Removing the name from the department is a wise decision, but that may be all MTSU can do at this point.

They can return the pianos to the Bankruptcy Court and they can sale them at auction like they are doing all the other personal items. This way they won't have to tell anyone anytime in the future they were purchased with a donation from McLean a dishonest person.
