‘Cabaret’ coming to Murfreesboro stage

THE MURFREESBORO POST

Residents are invited to experience the alluring, risque nightlife of 1920s Weimar Berlin, Germany, at the decadent Kit Kat Club, beginning Feb. 10.

The famous Broadway musical “Cabaret” is an absolute showstopper and is sure to entertain audiences.

The Center for the Arts will present the musical at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. Sundays, through Feb. 26.

Cabaret tells the story of Cliff Bradshaw, a teacher looking for work who meets and falls in love with showgirl Sally Bowles, at the Kit Kat Club. The couple eventually enter into a relationship in which some tough decisions have to be made.

Each night, the flamboyant master of ceremonies introduces lively jazz numbers to audiences. The seductive songs of “Cabaret” become a metaphor and social commentary for Germany’s progression toward Hitlerism, and the club provides not only nightly entertainment but also a solace to those enduring the tragedies of World War II.

Cabaret is written by Joe Masteroff with music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb. The story of “Cabaret” is based on a short novel entitled Goodbye to Berlin, written by Christopher Isherwood. Cabaret opened on Broadway in 1966 and has since won numerous Tony Awards.

The Center for the Arts’ production will be directed by Denis Pessar, choreographed by Julie Wilcox and produced by Jason Hillard.

Tickets start at $15 for adults, $13 for students, seniors and military, and $11 for children younger than 12 years old. Tickets for all performances may be purchased at boroarts.org, 615-904-2787 or in person at The Center for the Arts, located at 110 W. College St.
