$12M road realignment proposed, up for discussion

Navigating the heavily trafficked Manson Pike, Fortress Boulevard and Gresham Lane corridor could soon get a little easier if the city of Murfreesboro approves a major road realignment project.

In a joint meeting with the City Council Thursday evening, the Murfreesboro Planning Commission recommended a $12.4 million project that would cause traffic off the Interstate 24 interchange at Medical Center Parkway to funnel directly onto Fortress Boulevard as well as Medical Center Parkway and Manson Pike.

The planning commission will discuss the road project, which would be completed in two phases, at its regular meeting Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers on the first floor of Murfreesboro City Hall at 111 W. Vine St.

A public hearing date where residents can share their comments could be scheduled for early October.

With the road realignment, the city is attempting to prevent the type of traffic congestion that exists now at the intersection of Old Fort Parkway and Cason Lane.

City officials want to make road changes now before further development happens in the area.

“The cheapest thing you can do in the long run is this project,” said City Manager Roger Haley.

The project would take 2 ½ to 3 years to complete.

The two bodies considered a total of six road realignment projects but the planning commission recommended the alternative recommended by planning staff.

The proposed changes also will result in a realigned Gresham Lane intersecting Manson Pike farther west of the I-24/Medical Center Parkway interchange and a traffic light.

-From the existing Mason Pike at the Interstate 24 interchange to the existing Fortress Boulevard at the entrance of Puckett Crossing will be widened to five lanes;

- The existing Fortress Boulevard from the entrance to Puckett Crossing to Blaze Drive to five lanes;

- From the existing Gresham Lane near the east boundary of the Hale-Kirby property to the existing Mason Pike at Overall Creek to five lanes;

- From the intersection of the existing Gresham Lane and the proposed realigned Manson Pike to the proposed intersection of the existing Manson Pike and the proposed realigned Gresham Lane.

Just please don't start on this until the SR840/Beesley Road interchange opens. Looks like we're going to have to be detouring around this area for years. Hate to think what it will do to the Cason Lane and Old Fort Parkway area, but there is no doubt that the Gresham Lane intersection needs to be fixed and the Fortress Blvd intersection, at the very least, needs turn lanes and signals.

What would have been the cost if during the rushed construction of the medical center parkway, it had been planned and constructed correctly. Some local politicians pet projects do cost us in the long run. And what about the new Beasley road exchange, I thought it was ready to open, but now it has been blocked off. I guess it is not so important with no "Park" going to be built in Blackman.

Being a member of the Gresham family in TN. and knowing a direct decendent of the Gresham family for whom Gresham Lane was named I would love to see someone write a short history of the property and the family before even the last small part of the farm is covered in asphalt and oncrete. So much has been lost as it is, and being a pivital point in the battle of Stones River should help make this a possibility.

tnwolf, would love to read that story you propose. Maybe you should get together with Mike West and collaborate this bit of history.
